The Neutrophil Chemotactic Activity of Nasal Secretion in Patients with Chronic Pansinusitis
Paik Seog-In

Abstract
Dysfunction in neutrophil mobility may be the most common abnormality of the phagocytic system and could result in an increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. The PMN (polymorphonuclear leukocyte) chemotactic activity of nasal secretions obtained from 18 untreated patients with chronic pansinusitis was assayed by means of the leading front technique using a modified Boyden chamber. The purpose of the present study is to evaluate the chemotactic properties with regard to the pathogenesis of mucosal damage.
The chemotatic activity of neutrophil in normal person to FMLP, a strong chemoattractant, was measured at different concentration and peak value was noted at the concentration of 1X10^(-8)mol/L. PMN chemotactic activity was more decreased in purulent secretion than in mucoid secretion, but was found to exceed a random migration. It is probable that more less chemotactic activity in purulent secretions than in mucoid secretions is due to proteolytic degradation of chemotactic factors.
